Reclaim Large Areas of Peace

I’ve been working my way through a few courses for yoga teachers — a Business of Yoga course with Monica Bright & an Art of Sequencing course with Jason Crandell. Both have challenged me to winnow down WHY I TEACH.

Why do I share the teachings & practices of Yoga?

There is no big money to be made in this area … There is no fame, except for a very few “yoga-lebrities” … There is no prestige, no building named after me, no rock star status.

I continue to consider why I teach Yoga. I write about it a lot … lots of superfluous words that don’t make much sense or sound too esoteric or flowery to put into practice.

Here are some thoughts:

  • Physical - I teach Yoga to improve and/or maintain optimal MOBILITY in the body. When we know how to use our bodies & we move WELL, we experience the Yoga practice at deeper levels … & we also experience well-being out in the world.

  • Mental - I teach Yoga to not only focus the mind, but to allow the mind to REST. If you’re like me, your mind moves at breakneck speed (or is taken on a breakneck speed ride) daily, even moment-to-moment. When we learn to rest the mind on something beneficial — like moving the body or breathing optimally — we realize it is possible to work WITH our minds & bring out the best in ourselves.

  • Emotional / Spiritual - I teach Yoga to connect us all with our Best Selves, with each other … & with Something Bigger (whatever that means to you). When we move well, breathe optimally, rest our nervous systems & experience an inner awareness — we connect with a deep sense of peace that always dwells within us (that we can return to / tap into at any time).

Right now, I teach Yoga to facilitate students in pursuit of “reclaiming of large areas of peace” within themselves, so that they may “reflect it towards others.” I practice Yoga for the same reason — to reclaim ever larger areas of peace within myself — whether it be through physical practice, breathing techniques, relaxation practices, meditative practices, or daily living routines & rituals.

Why do you practice Yoga? If you’re a teacher, why do you teach? I’m fascinated to learn your WHY.

Thanks for reading. I hope you’ll comment below … I hope you’ll practice with me soon!
