as within, so without
NOTE: Here’s a post adapted from a post I wrote in January 2022 … We can always use reminders on how to balance the effects of the seasons — Enjoy!
As within, so without ... & vice versa. In Ayurveda, the science of longevity & daily well-being … & the “cousin” to the science of Yoga … the season of winter ❄️ is made up of the elements Air & Ether.
We can see these qualities of Air & Ether (or Space) in our surroundings as well as in our bodies. Our skin may feel dry, cold, or rough. We may feel our digestion is variable, or that our minds feel a little spacey. Nature, too, is showing us the qualities of Air & Ether through variable winds, cold temperatures and through the roughness of bark & branches devoid of leaves.
How can we return to balance during this season? In Ayurveda, we seek the OPPOSITE qualities of the imbalance we are experiencing. So to counteract the cold, dry, rough qualities of Winter:
— We take in nourishing, warm, simple foods.
— We are encouraged to REST rather than give in to the hypermobility of the season.
— We cultivate warmth (especially around the throat, ears, and feet).
— Did I mention REST?
Today I used a weighted blanket for my Yoga Nidra practice ... Holy Groundedness, Batman! For me, the heaviness totally countered the spacey, ungrounded feeling that Winter sometimes evokes in my body/mind.
The light, subtle properties of Winter can also allow us to dream more easily, access our creativity ... so wrap yourself up & indulge in creative expression!
