4 Myths About Meditation (Part 1)

MYTH: Meditation is about blissing out.

Subtext: So if I don't feel blissed out during / after meditation, it either doesn't work for me ... or I'm doing it wrong.

There are many myths about yogic meditation that have confused many of us or deterred us from trying meditation & experiencing the long-term benefits.

The goal of yogic meditation is not a constant "peace out, blissed out" hazy-eyed feeling. This feeling is neither practical nor helpful in our day-to-day lives full of goals, responsibilities & relationships.

The wisdom of Yoga applies to today -- we meditate not to be great meditators. We meditate to be more awake in our lives. What is it to be more awake?

- Joyful

- Present

- Compassionate

- Confident

- Loving

- Courageous

- Kind

These are active, positive states of being that bring LIFE to our lives & relationships with others & the world.

There are times when I sit down for meditation that I'm not feelin' it, I don't know if it's working, or I get up from meditation feeling "hmm, well, ok."

And I remember what one of my teachers at @himalayaninstitute says:

"What's beneficial for our growth & healing may not be pleasant at the time."

Think of getting up early, or working out, or eating that healthy meal ... are there days when you're like, "Ohmyg-d I do NOT want to do this today" ...?

And yet ... you know in the long run you feel more alive when you do your workout/mindful eating/regular bedtime.

(& don't get me wrong, there are days when you just need to sleep in & eat the donuts 🍩)

Same goes for meditation -- when you train your mind to rest & focus in yogic meditation, you gradually over time find that you are showing up for your life with more ease, joy & confidence.
